Game endings and beginnings
Apr. 18th, 2009 09:41 pmSo I finished Okami yesterday. Most of the business on the ark struck me as a little silly; for all the "Guess what? You get to fight this boss again!" fights, I was just ridiculously over-powered. (The ice-element beads that I was able to buy after defeating Lechku and Nechku were very helpful: both Crimson Helm and Orochi, being fire-element beasts, were particularly vulnerable.) The Yami fight, though? Sooooooooooo looooooong and tiring! But overall I'd say it was a pretty well-designed fight for a final boss.
I ended up with ~79 stray beads (a couple of them by walkthrough). I never figured out the fruit on the Guardian Tree over in Ryoshima North Coast. I never understood why I couldn't walk on the fire-spiders even when equipped with an item that allowed me to swim through friggin' lava, for heaven's sake. And (tongue-in-cheek) I never understood why Orochi wore those silly party hats everywhere he went.
Overall I really enjoyed the game. It had more platforming than I would have liked (but I gained patience with myself - and with the occasionally fussy brush technique - as a result). Exploring, helping people, feeding animals, and most of the dungeon work was all pretty fun. The original game developers certainly seemed to set themselves up at the end for development of a sequel - Let's go clean up the Celestial Plain! - but as that team of people no longer exists, I wonder if it will ever happen.
We purchased World of Goo last night as our next game to play together. We played about the first six levels in the first of five or six 'islands'. They're already getting a little tricky... It's also an addictive little game - just one more level! just one more try on this level! I bet I'll have a much better intuitive feel for tension, compression, and center of mass as construction concepts by the time we're done.
