amethyst73• Computer part 1: Huz ordered a spiffy new Apple iMac with the nice ATI Radeon 2450 graphics card in it. It came about a week and a half ago... and it froze a lot - like, three times in about an hour and a half, twice while watching videos online. We quickly found that this was a common (though not universal) problem, so Huz took it to the local Genius Bar. They were able to reproduce the problem, and ordered a replacement from Apple.
• Computer part 2: We picked up the replacement computer today, got it home, started it running, and ... found that it had a MUCH LESS NICE graphics card in it, even though it was SUPPOSED to be an exact replacement. Harumph! Thanks a lot, Apple. When the next replacement comes, we're going to make you set it up in the store and prove to us that it has the important bits in it. Maybe we'll even make you run Hulu for half an hour and make sure it's not one of the crashing machines.
• My car stereo has developed an intermittent problem. I can be driving along and playing the radio (or, much more commonly, an audiobook via the cassette adaptor), and the sound will cut out. The radio will still be getting power - the little ST will be lit up and all, but even with the cassette adaptor out, there will be no sound. If I turn the radio off entirely and drive 3-5 minutes, it might or might not decide to work again for an indeterminate period of time lasting anywhere from 4 to 20+ minutes. Or it might not work from the moment I turn on the engine, and decide to work some minutes later. It goes to the shop next weekend, and I really hope they can fix it before I have to do my next Berkeley run, which I'm sort of hoping will be the week immediately following.
• I've had a lot of random throat scratchiness in the past week or two, some of it really rather painful and exacerbated by attempts to sing. Given that the recital is this coming Saturday, I'm really hoping it decides to be in good shape for that, but I'm a little nervous.
