Anyone out there have any experience in replacing doorknobs?  The shafts on the inside of one half of the apparatus that look like they're supposed to secure the screws from the other half have completely broken off their half.  So the doorknob comes apart if one is not very careful.  Is this the sort of job we can likely do ourselves, or do we need to call our handy-dandy contractor guy?

I haven't had to install an entirely new door knob before, but I expect the good people at Home Despot should be able to answer your questions. It might help if you actually brought the part that detaches in with you for show and tell.

We acquired a doorknob at the local OSH yesterday, and the huz installed it - more by looking at how the previous doorknob set had worked than at looking at the directions, which he says 'were clearly written for someone who already knew what they were doing.' The faceplate is not flush with the door edge, but the system seems to function!
