Our Science in the Media class is really excited about the Making Stuff episodes (and gee, it's taught by a material science sort of physicist!)
I get red and itchy from some bandages too. That stuff that looks like fibrous paper really drives my skin nuts. holmes_iv gets it too, which made his arm look even worse, when he had to be in the hospital with an IV for a few days.
I keep intending to start carrying that springy self-adhesive bandage stuff for times like that, but I never do.
Oh and HUGE congrats on the new job! It sounds like it will be a lot of fun! You'll pick it up quick, don't worry. Also? You are plenty meticulous, and I bet you'll do _just fine_ with the expensive stuff.
