Various and sundry
Feb. 26th, 2011 02:55 pm• Done with the fever, yay! Still dealing with the nose/throat thing that's leftover from the previous week's cold. I sure hope I'm done with having to make Fortitude saves on a weekly basis. (Or, alternately, having something or other attack Fort on a weekly basis. My good stat is IQ! Strength and Con... um, not so much. Brain on a stick, me.)
• Done with first week of work! It's distinctly weird to be in a position where working significantly past 5 is considered working late. I have successfully done DNA clustering for the first time, which is kind of neat. And I've seen errors on a couple of machines now, too. (That, of course, is not the kind of excitement you really need at 4PM on a Friday, but it's apparently a pretty regular occurrence.)
• Finished Crystal Bearers last weekend. I find it odd that there are optional fights you can get into which are MUCH harder than the final boss. All you do with the final boss, mostly, is pull pieces off of him. If you've got decent armor, you're not exactly at any risk of dying. And the end movie, while pretty in a Squeenix kind of way, wasn't very fulfilling, somehow. I was left with a distinct feeling of 'meh' at the end. Fun enough as it goes, but yeah, I can't give it more than a 7.5 or so overall. I wonder if Square will ever release another *really good* game? I guess what I learn from this: I really appreciate both good story and good gameplay, but it's dratted rare that you can find them in perfect conjunction.
• Enjoying Phantom Detective. Story good, gameplay interesting.
• Enjoying Darths and Droids more than I enjoyed DM of the Rings. I think the author of Darths and Droids likes all his characters better than Seamus liked his; there's a kind of bitter flavor to its humor. Or maybe it's that I still love the LOTR movies too much to be able to poke that much fun at Aragorn. (We watched the three movies again - for the umpteenth time, I've long since lost count - over the past couple of months, what with me or Huz sick a lot. They're still really really cool.)
