National, good. Local, not so hot.
Nov. 5th, 2008 08:40 amWe've got the local results back, and I'm less than pleased with some of them.
4 (Parental notification required for teen abortion): This failed, which is good. I've seen this measure before; hopefully if it keeps appearing, it'll keep failing and folks will get the point already.
5 (Overhauls drug rehab system in prisons and parole system): Failed. I don't know how I feel about this one. I voted for it, but it really did want to change a whole lot of stuff in one fell swoop.
7 ("Renewable energy generation"): This also failed, which - believe it or not - is good. It was written in such a way that it would have forced independent energy producers out of the renewable marked. Lots of pro-environment groups were against this one, which tells you something.
8 (Bans same-sex marriage): Passed, dammit. I'm guessing that this'll hit the courts pretty quickly. And that there'll be an anti-8 on every subsequent ballot until it's undone. Even then, it'll still hit the courts.
9 (Victim's rights): Also passed, despite the fact that it duplicates already-existing laws, and puts some new ones up that I do't believe we really need.
10 (Rebates for alternative-fuel car purchases): Also failed, which, like 7, is a good thing. Was put on the ballot by a guy who owns a natural gas plant who apparently wants to increase his business. Again, lots of pro-environmental groups against this one. Still feels weird to have voted against 'pro-environment' propositions!
11 (Redistricting): Passed. Not sure how I feel about this, we'll see how it works out.
And somewhat unsurprisingly (and unhappily), Measures V and W both failed, W by a lot and V by a 213-vote margin. Both were designed to keep the Cargill salt flats out of the hands of developers, but they did it different ways. Each side in this battle portrayed itself as Good and the the other measure as Bad (there are so many Yes on [letter 1], No on [letter 2] signs around, it's not funny). Unsurprisingly as a result, neither won and so Cargill will get to do what it likes.
