AIs as humans - for digitalemur
Oct. 3rd, 2014 10:11 pmHey
digitalemur!
I know that copperbadge had been vaguely thinking about JARVIS in human form for a while, but nonetheless this tumblr post reminded me strongly of the tactile input bit in $LoveStory part 2. Is s/he stepping on toes? If so, I'll bite them for you.
(It reminds me of it in a GOOD way. It's sweet, and neat, and just a little sexy. Avengers and JARVIS fans might consider reading it. Plus, it's short.)

Date: 2014-10-04 12:57 pm (UTC)The subtitle of the movie is Age of Ultron, and in various comics iterations Ultron creates Vision to strike back at the Avengers and then Vision is like "so sorry, you created me with morals and feelings, STICK IT WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE, ULTRON!" and fucks off to join the Avengers, I am actually HOPING they do something with those ideas because seeing JARVIS co-opted by Ultron and turned against Tony would be one of the scariest things they could do, for people who are already attached to JARVIS. I also found out yesterday that at some point in comics history Vision got turned back into a holographic being for a while at one point. And there was this horrible plotline where he got separated from his wife and family and there was some weird shit with reality and it turned out his kids were just constructs, not real beings, and it was really really sad.
So Jensen is vaguely based on me wondering what Joss is gonna do in Avengers 2, and Gino is a little bit inspired by the same idea _plus_ yeah I think about the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager sometimes. But no biting is required, because a lot of these things are actually tropes, they're tropes because they're _really compelling ideas_ but they are, in comics land, tropes. If anything he's actually riffing on Scifigrl47's "what if Dummy got turned into a human by magic, and could change back and forth when he wanted, but had to figure out how to live as a little boy?" series, which are amazing and heartbreaking and awesome and Sci encourages him to write stuff set in that series. I had to work pretty hard to _not_ let Jensen and Acton sound too much like that series. Also I utterly ripped off one of the first things the Tenth Doctor said after regeneration: "Ooooh, new teeth. ...that's weird."
Me, I'm just compulsively reading all those short fics Copperbadge has been posting, with delight, because I believe he's felt unable to write longer work for a while due to health problems and moving. HE WROTE A HUMAN JARVIS FIC? GIMME! is my reaction.
A couple of his closer friends follow me on Tumblr and I've talked about my S2B2 stuff in his livestream movie nights at various times, so some of his crowd know I'm out there. I think what you're seeing is that we're all obsessed with some of the same ideas. MAXIMUM BOT FEELS for one thing.

Date: 2014-10-04 01:05 pm (UTC)But it's extremely common in d/S stories for Sir to put his hand on the back of the neck of his sub. And don't get me wrong, I've read stories set in universes where everybody's a dom or a sub and it's sometimes separate from sexual relationships (though rarely) and _outside_ of those settings that's a common gesture of comfort from a close friend in fic. But when you put it and Sir in the same paragraph I'm like WHAT THE FUCK JARVIS ISN'T A SUB... OR IS HE?
So there you go, more of a tour through fandom tropes. Wow.

Date: 2014-10-04 03:41 pm (UTC)So, is copperbadge like, an actual writer? S/he posts a f*ckton of stuff on tumblr (as does Diane Duane, who I just followed), and I'm like, wow, lotsa time to do tumblr stuff, you must spend a lot of time in front of a computer.
(Lazy me. Haven't visited c's real homepage.)

Date: 2014-10-04 05:20 pm (UTC)He has some self-published books, if you go to his Extribulum website. Oh, and his real life day job is donor research for a large nonprofit so he's sitting in front of a computer all day, thus the ability to post so often.
