I think I'm coming moderately close to finishing FFF: Chocobo Tales.  Just about to do card-battle with the mid-boss in the last of the four 'dungeons'.  For the most part, my early impressions have held true.  I would generally agree with IGN's assessment: fun, but sometimes too difficult for its own good.  (I note, [profile] nezumiko, that even they had difficulty with the second Flaming Chocobo book.)  I would also add that some of the minigames could stand another sentence - nay, even a few precious words - of explanation on how, exactly, to play.

Yesterday I was in my local GameStop and noticed they had a DS Download station, which I'd somehow totally failed to notice the last several times I was in.  Since I had the DS with me, I successfully downloaded (after a couple of attempts) the demo of Apollo Justice, Ace Detective.  It's the successor to the Phoenix Wright series, and looks from the demo to have pretty similar gameplay (from what I've read) to the original series.  In a courtoom trial that runs essentially nothing like the real thing, witnesses give testimony, which the player then examines line by line, pressing for more information or presenting contrary evidence - never mind that it isn't generally in the interest for the counsel to uncover inconstencies in its own client's testimony, as the demo forces the player to!  The writing is quite amusing and fun to read, though I was simultaneously entertained and pained by Apollo's twit-ness.  Hopefully he'll grow up a little as the story progresses.  I may have to hunt down the original Phoenix Wright series - I enjoyed the small taste that I got the other night.  ('Sides, Phoenix himself shows up in the demo, and it seems clear that things have changed in the seven years since the previous game.  Suffice it to say he's not working with the law firm anymore.)

Finally, there's a version of Spore due out for the DS (along with several other platforms - no Wii version so far, sigh) this September.  Spore has been highly regarded vaporware for some years now, and I'm pleased that it finally has a solid release date.  Maybe EA just got sick of Will Wright saying "I'm working on it, okay??"  Anyway, while it will not look as pretty as the PC version and won't have as complete a package, but still looks distinctly interesting.  You can bet that's another demo I'll download if it becomes available.
