Yep, Japanese toilet seats (and Korean ones) are a blast. It's a shame you didn't decide to experiment with it. I actually came to like the features quite a bit while I was in Japan. Especially a heated seat in an otherwise unheated (and COLD) bathroom. Although the word bathroom itself is problematic in a Japanese house, since the bath and the toilet are usually in separate rooms.
Anyway I much enjoyed reading this and am looking forward to more. A bug report though: your picture links all go to 404 Not Found. No slide show for me. D:
