Diet sodas

So in lab meeting the last few weeks, whoever's provided snacks has generally brought diet sodas of one form or another as drinks. My analysis thus far:

Diet Hansen's black cherry (sweetener: sucralose) - Completely undrinkable. Nasty artificial-sweetener taste, coupled with a strong cherry-cough-syrup sense.

Coca-cola zero (sweetener: aspartame) - Passable. I can still taste the artificial-sweetener, but the 'true Coke' flavor is relatively strong. Vaguely interested in doing a Diet Coke vs Coke Zero taste test.. except then I'd have to buy a can of each.

Hm, maybe that's it in terms of diet drinks I've subjected myself to recently. Reminder to self: Provide maybe some Juice Squeezes as well as diet sodas when I do lab snack; there were some of those the first week and they were taken up almost instantly.

In other news, getting much closer to done with my protein list! I have one horribly problematic one that will take some serious staring (beyond the 2 hrs I've spent on the dratted thing already), but at the moment I seem to be in an easy section of the list: pretty obvious signal sequences, and very obvious transmembrane domains. I *like* those proteins.

On the one hand, yay lab snack! On the other hand, boo diet soda1 That's my incredibly nuanced response. :-P

1) I am in the BEST-FED lab EVER. We get a platter of fresh fruit on Monday mornings, usually enough food to feed an army on Wednesdays at lab meeting, and bagels on Friday mornings. I have to be fairly careful at lab meeting to eat mostly fruit - there's always high-quality chips, and today there were high-quality cookies as well.

2) Very belated happy birthday. I hope it was fun and cool!

1) That's so great. Your lab definitely beats mine by a mile, though between my department and my choir I do okay. (Every week: cookies and tea at choir rehearsal on Mondays and Thursdays; neuro lunch/snack on Thursday afternoons; student/postdoc dinner on Thursdays evenings; lunch at teaching meeting on Fridays; bagels, fruit and juice at choir on Sundays. Some weeks: lunch at cognitive lunch on Wednesdays, lunch and evening reception food if we have a colloquium on Fridays.) The big problem is that each free food event is also a meeting I have to attend!

3) Thank you! It was: I let myself take my actual birthday entirely off, which was amazing. And then I saw friends in the city and had a dinner thing with people here.
