Hypothesis on the apparent spread of infected area: not actually infection?

On the theory that the large red (slightly swollen) itchy area around the bite is an allergic reaction, I've taken a tablet of (expired) Benadryl.  We'll see whether that does any good.

I hope that helps! I've also heard cat claws tend to harbor lots of infection-causing bacteria, for whatever reason. Perhaps their teeth are similar? Anyway, feel better soon, that all sounds very unpleasant.
