Friday night we went to go see the movie Hairspray.  In concordance with the paper reviews, I can say that yes, it is a fun movie.  John Travolta does a remarkable job of never letting the viewer forget that, well, that's John Travolta!, while at the same time doing a good portrayal of Edith.  Never having seen the musical, I'm just kind of assuming that it's a good movie adaptation.  That said, Hairspray wasn't as interesting a musical or movie as Dreamgirls was.  Here's hoping that the next movie musical on tap, Sweeney Todd, is good and that the actors can sing well enough to hold up the parts.

Sunday night we had a nice time at [personal profile] shoutingboy's birthday party.  Nice apt complex and pool, good food, good company!

We've been enjoying the Final Fantasy Retrospective video series over at gametrailers.com.  (Thanks, GWJ!) They have five parts posted of a planned thirteen, releasing one every week.  The ratio is generally more than one game per video, so they've gotten through Seven (and the various spinoffs of #7) at this point.  I'm impressed by how informative the series is.  There's commentary on the storylines (which so far is not tremendously spoiler-y), the graphics, and of course the gameplay in each iteration of the famous series.  Great watching if you're a fan.  Maybe we'll check out their Zelda Retrospective while waiting for their remaining episodes of the FF series.

In the land of Zelda:
Dang, doesn't Zant know it's bad luck to break a mirror?  And Ganondorf's name has come up for the first time.  Nintendo's totally kept his design from Ocarina; I have no idea if he's had green skin with red diamonds on it the whole way along.
Side quests: Got 20 poes, and the bottle w/fairy tears from Jovani.  Got the heart piece in the fishing hole (ah, Zora armor plus clawshot = happiness).  Got heart piece in mini-cavern-thing by Kakariko Gorge.  Have found several of the grottoes in various parts of Hyrule Field.  And a bunch of golden bugs.
Annoying thing #1: The mini-dungeon-cavern-thing in the cliff at the northern end of Eldin Bridge.  Haven't worked on it much, but haven't figured out how to not land in the lava in the first room.  Annoying thing #2: Dratted bottle in the dratted fishing hole.  I *know* it's there.  I *know* you're supposed to do bobber fishing off the bridge into the little section of the pond.  I've stood there for what feels like ages (the other day, I stood there and fished for more than a day and a night in game time) and not even gotten a regular fish, let alone a bottle.  Mebbe I need bait?

I really love the original Hairspray movie. How does the musical hold up in comparison?

Unfortunately, I can't comment on that, never having seen the original Hairspray movie. I'm guessing that if you like the music of the period (late 50's-early 60's pop), it helps in its establishment of the setting. The lead had a good voice for that particular style of music, but her voice alone wasn't enough to make one particularly long, repetitive song ("I Can Hear the Bells") engaging over the long haul.

Queen Latifah, on the other hand, has a nice voice, really well suited for the single gospel-pop song her character sings. I kind of wish she'd gotten to sing more. Ah well.
