Congrats on the job offer! And I'm glad you went to get that cat bite taken care of right away. Bite wounds can go downhill really really fast. I hope it feels better soon!

Why is that? And is it only cat bites that are hard enough to break the skin? I know you should take animal bites seriously, but I don't really understand what makes them bad sometimes-- likelihood of bacterial infection, do we react to saliva, or what?

Oh, scratches can break the skin too, just generally not deeply. A bite is a puncture wound; think about how long a cat's canines are. If they really dig in, they can get quite deep.

Animal mouths have lots of bacteria. Also, the cat allergen (for folks who are allergic) is apparently in their saliva, which is why I thought part of this might be an allergic reaction.

well, animal mouths are full of nasty stuff. bites are often puncture wounds, so an anaerobic environment is often pretty easy for things to come by (read abscess). That's all I can think of.
