Tired of being sick

Man I'm tired of the flu and its leftovers.
Monday I had a drippy nose, which I sort of thought was due to allergies. (It was right on time for my horrendous seasonal allergy to the California privet trees that live around here.) Didn't feel quite like allergies, but whatever. I go to work and do my thing.
Tuesday: I feel much more distinctly ill, but go into work anyway. It's the day before certain pieces of equipment are scheduled to be moved to our new lab location, and one of the three people in our group is out on vacation. I _can't_ stay home. I get the bright idea to take some Advil after lunch (and finding that my temp is over 100), and do a lot better the rest of the day. I'm coughing a little.
Wednesday: I can't miss work.
I wake up with a temp of a little over 100°.
I contact my supervisor, who tells me to stay home. I do, with fever spiking over 101° later in the day, at which point I decide that this is the sort of thing Advil is for, isn't it? Also, it's damnably hot, and we have no air conditioning in the house, which may be contributing to the high fever. Wednesday night is the first night that postnasal drip provokes coughing to the extent that it takes some hours to get to sleep.
Thursday: Holiday! Fever gone, but still feeling pretty lousy; cough is bronchial. I do not go to the big family gathering so as to avoid infecting everyone. Still damn hot.
Friday: Intended to go into work, but feeling lousy enough that I write in sick. I fail to get any response back from my supervisor, which worries me a little. Around noon, once I've gotten some more sleep, I email her and say I could come in if she wants me to, which does provoke a response: thanks, but no; by the way, your remaining group member is feeling under the weather. Not nearly so hot today, thank heavens.
Saturday: Home all day, feeling less ill but still not wonderful. Cough now superficial (no longer bronchial) but very easily provoked.
Sunday: I'm still not better, partially 'cuz it's taking up a good chunk of what's supposed to be my sleep time coughing, drat it. Nose has now moved from the drippy stage to the dry-and-stuffy stage. Maybe my throat will be less easily irritated tonight and I can actually get a decent night's rest?

Date: 2013-07-08 05:33 pm (UTC)Regarding both the fevers and the throat pain: taking ibuprofen doses regularly according to package directions, and not stopping until you know you're less sick and you don't think the symptoms will return, has an additive effect and can be more effective than starting and stopping every time the fever or pain gets worse again. I find it hard to do this, because I'm so trained to take as little as is effective for a headache or cramps, but consistent dosing over a few days can be really helpful for fevers and aches from flu and cold. If you're concerned it will start to irritate your stomach, having a little snack with your ibuprofen is a good policy. It would not be wrong to treat your ongoing sore throat in this manner. (I mean, unless you've got some sensitivity to the drug that I don't know about.)
