Quick question for Wii owners

So, we just bought a copy of Paper Mario: 1000-Year Door used (-10% discount - probably about the last use of our GameStop membership) - not that we're likely to get to it for a while.  Wii owners, riddle me this: Do we need to go find a GameCube memory card to play/save GameCube games?

I believe the answer is yes. I haven't tried in a while but I think I remember not being able to save my Super Monkeyball games.

And you're right. The game functions perfectly well, but saving cannot be done. Happily, it looks like GameCube memory cards are pretty inexpensive.

So riddle me this as well, since I think you've played some of these: is it reasonable to play 1000-Year-Door without having played the original Paper Mario or Mario RPG? (It certainly looks from the earliest bit like 1K-Door works perfectly well as a standalone.)

Sorry, I couldn't say. I never actually owned a GameCube, and the only thing I went out and deliberately bought after getting my Wii was Monkeyball.

(Sheepishly edited to put a verb in the last clause.)
